Story of the month
Why is Rio de Janeiro called “Rio”?
When Portuguese explorers arrived on Brazil’s coast in January 1502, they encountered a vast bay surrounded by dramatic mountains and lush landscape. Mistaking the bay for the mouth of a large river, they named the place Rio de Janeiro — “River of January.”
Although no river was actually there, the name remained. Over time, Rio became more than a geographical reference. It turned into a symbol of openness, movement and contrast — where mountains meet the ocean, and nature blends seamlessly with city life.
Understanding Brazilian Portuguese also means understanding how history, perception and emotion shape language. Sometimes, names are not about accuracy, but about the way a place is felt in a moment.
